About
Not only do I have graduate credentials in American and other English literatures, I have years of teaching and tutoring experience in secondary and post-secondary education.
In particular, as a former college admissions adviser, I have helped students work on their college applications and essays. Many have been admitted to highly selective universities, e.g. Johns Hopkins, George Washington, UPenn, Yale, Brown, William & Mary, etc.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I first meet with every new student free of charge, to see if s/he and I are a good fit for each other. Thereafter, I give an optional and comprehensive "level" test to determine the kind of individualized academic program that would really benefit the student.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a tenured professor of English literature and composition. Previously, I served as an admissions adviser for international students.
I have advanced degrees from Johns Hopkins (M.A. and M.L.A.) in cross-cultural studies and Modern American Literature, and a BFA in Painting from The Maryland Institute College of Art.
As a published poet and writer, I have had op-ed pieces in the Washington Post and Baltimore Sun. Moreover, my creative works have appeared in The Muse (Columbia, MD); Visions-International (Austin, TX); Old Hickory Review (Jackson, TN); and Important Words: A Book for Poets & Writers (Boynton/Cook Pub.), among others.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My rates are negotiable, but generally start at $50 an hour with a minimum of an hour session per week.
How did you get started teaching?
It was natural evolution. Although I have been involved in many other career pursuits before arriving at teaching in earnest, I have found teaching to be the most rewarding and satisfying.
What types of students have you worked with?
All levels from K-12 to higher ed. As a college professor, I now mainly work with young adults.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a tutor in your area of expertise?
Make sure the tutor is well qualifed, experienced, and caring. Intellect cannot grow without heart.
What questions should students think through before talking to tutors about their needs?
Why do I want help from a tutor? What do I want to gain from him or her?
Students should first consider purpose.
