About

I have my Masters in Biomedical Engineering, have worked as a tutor for over 7 years, and am a dedicated High School Chemistry and Biology Teacher. In my years of tutoring, I have been trained in SAT/ACT prep, as well as worked with countless students on various AP Examinations.

My first experience tutoring was in high school as a method of studying for the many AP and honors classes I was taking. During this time, I developed a keen eye for different ways of thinking in the students I was helping, be it more visual thinkers, direct verbal learners, or something entirely different. Each person I encountered brought a different light to the topics we covered, helping me build a repertoire of lesson plans, unit summaries, and techniques. However, I strived for more. As word got out, I began to tutor individuals that were in CP classes and even younger siblings in middle and elementary school. Not only were there different ways of thinking that I could learn from, but I was also able to train myself in how to explain concepts to different levels of understanding. Currently, I am constantly looking for more ways to improve myself and how I deliver knowledge and understanding to those I tutor; my number one rule is there is always room for growth and to take pride in how far you've come.

First look: The first session always begins with a 'getting to know you', this includes a background in curriculum, understanding level, and some conceptual tests of learning style. This develops a preliminary understanding of the student's needs, and how best I can fit those needs. After every session, I carefully consider what we achieved, what we still need to work on, and how concepts learned can be reinforced with practice (this is typically provided after every session as worksheets or videos). As we progress, a bird's eye view is developed, connecting the various topics and tools having been taught, ultimately leading to a focused and framed understanding for the student.

Frequently asked questions

The most important thing to do is understand a students learning style. Asking them questions about what classes they seem to find more easy and which they find more diffufcult gives a good jnsight into which ways they enjoy learning, and which teaching styles tend to make them enjoy a class more. One example of this is that many people good at math naturally tend to learn that they learn better through pattern recognition of many examples.

I have been tutoring other student since my freshmen year of high school. I am now in my second year (senior year) of college, studying to be a biomedical engineer. I consistently tutor classmates and children of friends and family.

I price based on how much effort will go into the sessions beforehand. If the child requires very minimal attention but still needs consistent help and organizational help, then the pricing is about $20, and can be negotiable. However, if it is higher learning (HS or college level) that I would have to prepare the lessons and communicate out side for lessons be try often, the pricing would be more in the $30 range.
