I have been a teacher in Kenner, Louisiana for 6 years now and absolutely love my job. My favorite subject to teach is Algebra 1 however this year I have had the opportunity to Geometry and I am loving that too! In my mind, learning math is equivalent to learning critical thinking and problem solving skills which are essential to success in our global market. Math should be a process of exploration, curiosity and inquiry rather than a set of steps and procedures. This is how we can empower young people!
With the way we teach and test math subjects today, it is important that our students are building conceptual understanding in additional to procedural fluency. I am a content leader for Jefferson Parish and the state of Louisiana so I have had an opporutnity to explore the way concepts are developed through the common core standards. I am experienced in teaching high school level courses and currently support teachers at my school as a Master Teacher. This experienced has deeped my knowledge of how student understanding is developed before highschool so I can identify gaps in understanding and remediate unfinished learning. I am also familiar with the Eureka Math curriculum.
Because I am now an instructional coach, I only get one class with students and that is the absolute best part of my day. I am excited to spend more time tutoring to get more time teaching students! I love watching my students engage with new ways of thinking and challenge themselves as they grapple with difficult concepts. It is a fun challenge for me to constantly find new ways of teaching and growing my students.
Ms. Swanson was all-around detailed and informative. She made all efforts to accommodate me at the level of learning I was at and helped me work up from there. Ms. Swanson uses many techniques to teach the lesson at hand and gives many different points of view on it so that whichever way you get the answers she helps you understand how that came to be. Explaining things with hands-on, music, trivia, puzzles and pure pencil and paper is exactly what I needed to be successful. Kind & diverse
Ms. Swanson has been tutoring my child for two years in algebra and geometry. She brought her grade from a C to an A. Every time she goes, she comes back and gets an A on her test. Ms. Swanson has made an impact on my child by showing her math is fun and it is easy. My daughter loves going to her because she understands it and can teach her classmates. Not only is she an excellent math teacher, she is an amazing individual and gives 100%. My daughter would have not made it through math without Me Swanson.
I think it is essential to understand what students are currently doing well in and what knowledge they do have and build from there. Often times we focus on the need or the and I beleive starting from the strength of the student is more impactful.
I am a Level 2 Certified Secondary Math Teacher in Louisiana. I have been evaluated as Highly Effective every year since I began teaching 6 years ago and consistently score in the top 10% of teachers with LEAP scores.
Typically I charge $40 for an hour of tutoring. If a student need support multiple times per week, I can reduce my price to $35 an hour.
