About

Hi. I am a clinical psychologist and excellent writer with a passion for English. I can help you with specific assignments or general learning, and can edit your essays and papers.

I want you to learn ways to improve grammar and sentence structure, clearly make your point, and enhance the richness of your communication.

A member of the "grammar police," I will be honest with you so that you eventually do these things on your own.

As a psychologist, I stand out because I am open-minded and understand how hard it is to struggle academically or to want to achieve your greatest potential and feel stuck.

In general, whatever the topic, my instruction to you is: your piece should have "punch." It should deliver your message clearly and creatively, using the fewest but most powerful words and images to convey the most, in your own voice rather than mine. That last sentence was long but it says a lot.

Becoming a psychologist takes years of education and training. It is hard work but worth it. I spent 20 years doing that. The best part of being a therapist is witnessing transformation in my patients as they develop insight, make life changes, and realize their true potential. We do this together, because therapy is a two-person process. It is co-created, much like tutoring.

My other favorite part of my work is being part of a creative team with a common goal.

I am not a professional writer, but English always was my first love, and I got better grades in English than in Psychology at UVA, and wrote a grant proposal that was approved immediately.

Just so you know who I am as a person: I love speaking French, reading, film, music, art & design, and animals. I am currently working on ways to use applied psychoanalysis outside of the office, e.g., helping people and groups understand unconcious dynamics to increase their awareness of themselves and those with whom they work.

Frequently asked questions

I will ask you to send a writing sample of your own, or you may ask me for a writing assignment to review. This will let me asses your strengths and weaknesses as well as your personal writing style. I will then give you feedback that is positive and aspirational but also realistic. My goal is to help you, so I will not ignore errors or hold back suggestions that might enhance your writing. Our process will be collaborative, at a pace you choose. I truly love writing, so this will be enlightening for you and fun for me! I also am happy to tutor in psychogy, at which I have true expertise and many degrees and certifications.

Education: I have a BA with Distinction from UVA, where I majored in Psychology and minored in English. I have an MA and a PhD in Psychology from LSU.

Experience: I completed an internship at Bellevue Hospital and a fellowship at St. Vincent's Hospital, both in Manhattan. I then worked for ten years in hospital psychiatry in NY while also studying psychoanalytic theory and practice. I moved back to my hometown of New Orleans in 2002, and have had a private practice in psychology since then. I have been in the field for over 30 years. I am eager to shift my focus and do less therapy and more education, public speaking, and consulting.

I am open to negotiation. These are hard times for all of us.

I taught a psychology class at LSU when I was still a graduate student, and taught psychology and psychiatry trainees about mental illness in NY. I helped my niece edit her English papers but cannot take credit for that because she is brilliant, and it was pretty easy to edit her papers. Sometimes we sent 10 emails each to get her papers to A+ level.

College students, my niece who was in high school, interns and externs in psychology in NY, and psychiatry residents in NY.
