About

I tutor high school math and science: algebra I & II, prealgebra, geometry, advanced math, precalculus, physical science, biology, chemistry, and physics. I worked for Spectrum Tutoring until the business shuttered in 2009, and then I started my own business at that time.

My college degree is in chemistry with a math minor. I was a practicing analytical chemist before I retired and I approach math and science from a real-world perspective. Math is a tool, not an end in itself. Science classes early in education are primarily to introduce students to the topics.

Education is not the filling of a vessel, but the lighting of a fire, a fire that continues to burn for a lifetime of learning.

I approach students with a focus on how each one learns and tailor my services to work with that student's learning style. Basic learning styles are visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and spacial. All of us favor one or two styles over the others, but each person blends their own style.

How do you learn best? By watching someone do something, then doing it yourself? By doing something along with someone? By listening to instructions and following them? By a combination of some or all of these? By trial and error until you figure it out yourself?

Everyone is different and everyone learns in their own way. If you don't know your learning style I will help you to figure it out and then improve your learning in the subject in which I'm tutoring you and in everything else you do. It's important to know your learning style and embrace it rather than try to fight against it or worse, fight against the unknown. There are enough battles in life. Don't make yourself one of them. You'll learn faster and more easily once your understand yourself better, and you'll build on that knowledge.

I greatly enjoy working with students one-on-one. It's been my experience that working with a student side-by-side helps them achieve their goals much more easily. Classrooms are how we teach today, but it isn't necessarily the best way for each of us to learn.

Work with me and I will help you reach your goals and potential.

Frequently asked questions

We get in contact and talk to see if we are a good fit to start. We make payment arrangements, then we meet, usually at a library, and have a first session. I evaluate the student and the student evaluates me. If we are a good fit and we feel we can work together, we get to work for the rest of the session and set up a schedule for future sessions.
