Evonne Long Math Tutoring
About
I have a passion for helping my students reach far beyond just passing their difficult subjects, but to accomplish any goals they set their mind to. I have been working with students for over 30 years. I developed a diagnostic test that quickly determines where student's difficulty starts and with student input create an individual and personalized study plan. Then we simultaneously work to maintain the student at a passing level while seeking to bridge the gap.
I graduated from Indiana University Bloomington in 1984 with an B.A. in Biology. I have worked with with students grades K-12 and college students as a Private Tutor Counselor, a Tutor, and a Tutor Counselor with the Upward Bounds Program. I take great pride in my success, and in knowing that I have a made a difference in the lives of my students. And, even though I only worked for 8 weeks in the summer of 1984 with Upwards Bounds, I was awarded Tutor Counselor of the year.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My typical process for working with a new student starts with a friendly greeting, where I introduce myself and then I try to engage the student in conversation and put them at ease. I start by aking them what they feel they need help with and why are they experiencing difficulty. I also ask them what do they like best about the subject and what do they like least about it. Next I ask them what they hope to gain from tutoring sessions and tell them if they take an active role that we can get there together. If appropriate I ask the parent what is happening with their child and why they feel the child is struggling. I then offer my own personal diagnostic testing to determine exactly where their child's abilities lie. I then talk with the parent and student about the results and show the place where the child's personal study plan will start. I try to reassure the student that we will work to get them to a passing place, while simultaneously working to bridge the gap in their skills until we are successful.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
The advice that I would give a student looking to hire a teacher in my area of expertise would be to not just look at the education and training but also for a good fit. Determine if that person has the ability to relate to the student, the ease with which the student can understand the person and if the teacher seems patient, committed and passionate about working with the student. Also determine if the person has the ability to convey information at a level that the student can understand.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
The questions that students should think through before talking to teachers about their needs is to ask them why the student should work with them. What type of results has the teacher gotten in working with students with issues similar to the student. And, if the previous students have just passed or excelled in their classes. They should ask if there are any student reviews and/or for references.
