I've been tutoring off-and-on for 15 years, and now I have a Masters degree from Stanford in Applied Physics. I find math and physics absolutely fascinating, but I understand how confusing they can be, especially if they aren't taught just right for the student. I offer a problem-solving-centric approach, using practice questions as springboards to understand complex ideas and build mastery. If that sound right for you, let me know!

Less fascinating, but frequently very important for educational and career advancement, are standardized tests like GRE (my score: 340/340), SAT(2340/2400) AP, and ACT(35/36). I have a knack for "reading multiple choice," as one of my teachers put it, and I want to help you develop the same ability. Test-taking nonsense should never be an impediment to learning. I can help you develop the specific skills needed for each of these monstrous exams, from mathematical shortcuts to linguistic extrapolation.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

When starting with a new student, the first step is to assess the student's goals, what the student knows, what they don't, and how they learn best. If recent (graded) course materials are available, I ask to look them over before the first meeting; sometimes, I will need to give the student a pre-test or some challenge problems to see what is going on. Then we can create a plan to get from our starting point to the student's goal.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a Master's of Science degree in applied physics from Stanford University. My Bachelor's was also in physics, with minors in math and electrical/computer engineering (and also painting, but that's less relevant).

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

My base rate is $65/hour for online tutoring or in-person tutoring at the Westfield library (when it re-opens), with a $5-10 travel charge for other locations. This cost will also cover a reasonable amount of prep time per session. There may also be an additional fee of up to $10 if requests from the student require excessive prep time.

How did you get started teaching?

I joined different tutoring/mentorship programs starting is high school. and continued doing so all the way through grad school. When I was a TA in college, I organized study sessions outside of class to help students prepare for tests and get their last-minute questions answered. Over time, that evolved into one-on-one tutoring, which I found much more beneficial for my students.

What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked with students ranging from middle school to university, and from student who feel that they are behind and need to catch up, to advanced students who want to learn beyond the offerings of their schools' curricula.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

How do you tend to learn best? What are your goals, and what obstacles need to be overcome first? Are anxiety, stress, or nerves part of the problem, or is it just a matter of understanding the material? Any or all of these answers can tell your tutor how to best help you.
