About this tutor

I am a certified teacher. I decided not to return to the classroom this year, but rather focus my teaching skills in one to one or small group settings.  I have been an Intervention Reading Specialist and an Educational Coach for the entire school. I have taught all elementary grades 1-5, as well as 6th grade math and science for gifted and talented students. Previously, students and parents nominated me for the Walmart Teacher of the Year. I won that year and while I received a $1000 stipend for that honor, the real reward is knowing that parents and students felt I deserved it.

I am enthusiastic about leading students to the next level. I meet them where they are and watch them soar. There is not a feeling like it. My goal is to teach solid, core understanding of a subject. I have a multitude of best practices after my 23 years as a teacher.

While I have extensive training in reading interventions, I have always loved math and science. I taught Engineering in middle school with 6th grade students.

I currently reside in Carmel, Indiana. I have 5 grandsons here who visit several times a week. My facebook profile is:

Janet Oliver-Minton

if you would like to learn a bit about me.

I would love to work with students who may feel as though they are struggling to grasp a subject. I want every child to know they can do anything they set their mind to do!

Our son had Janet Minton for first grade and he really showed so much development that year. We actually moved in the middle of the year and decided to keep him in her class because he was doing so well. She made learning fun and our son really enjoyed going to school every day. His reading and math really progressed over the course of the year. He still talks about Mrs. Minton and is now a third grader and doing great.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

My first meeting can be over the phone or in person with the parent to get a feel for what outcomes/goals they would like to see. Next, I will meet with parent and child, but I would like to speak directly with the child to see what they feel they would like to accomplish in our time together. Then we would set up a time that would work for both if us. I prefer to work at my home.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

As I stated, I am a certified 1-6 teacher. I have taught 23 years in 3 different school corporations. I have excellent references upon request.
