Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When I begin working with a new student, I like to get to know the child personally while assessing what the student already knows. I also like to talk with past teachers the student had in the recent year in order to get a better idea on what the child needs to work on. Clear communication with parents is also crucial to me. When online tutoring, I conduct various assessments to track student progress and create personalized lessons.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have tutored middle school language arts and science. I graduated from Purdue University and got a job right away within a school system. I am currently working at an enrichment center that focuses on STEM. I also have been an online tutor for two years.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My pricings are flexible depending on the time each session is and how much material needs to be prepared.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching my freshman year at Purdue University and simply developed a passion for it. I then began tutoring as a way to help individual students grow.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with a variety of students as far as age and ability levels. I have experience in differentiated instruction and lesson planning.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently have been tutoring a child through zoom and we work on sight words each session. The child has been struggling with the reversal of the letter "b" and "d." Recently that child has been using strategies I taught him to figure out which letter is which in the word he is sounding out.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would tell that student to make sure that the teacher is able to meet your needs and create a fun/enjoyable learning environment.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Students need to think about what they are struggling with, their most successful way of learning, and topics that they are interested in.
