Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
To catch up on the placement of the student, and provide assistance. Firstly, identify their learning style, their strength(s) and weakness(es). Secondly, utilize their strength(s) while improving their weakness(es) to help them better understand mathematical terms and concepts to absolve mathematical problems via practicum.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have 10+ years of math tutoring experience. Early experience derived from tutoring college students at Wilbur Wright. However, my mathematical expertise is widespread...ranging from Early Math, Arithmetic, PreAlgebra, Algebra 1, Trigonometry, PreCalculus and Calculus (1-3). I currently tutor independently...tutoring Calculus 1-3, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, and Statistics. However, anyone is welcomed if in need of my services.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge between $30-50 per session. My travelling distance extends up to 20 miles and nothing more. I also tutor online via Zoom if in-person encounter not possible.
How did you get started teaching?
As a college student at Wilbur Wright College, I needed help with a Calculus course, so I went to a tutoring center. I ran into a tutor, named Margarita, who realized I had potential as a math tutor, recommended that I apply as a math tutor. She recognized that I had a desire to learn as well as a desire to help others in addition to being great at mathematics. I took her advice and apply for the position. I soon was hired in January 2011 and stayed on until my graduation in May 2013.
What types of students have you worked with?
Mainly college students. I also tutor elementary, middle school and high school students. I tutored elementary, middle, and high school students neighboring Wilbur Wright College.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
At Wilbur Wright College, students, from a particular math class, I don't recall the name of the math course, but were studying for a midterm, so most of them came to me, and suggested I should do a group study for the exam. So, I found a study space, along with a white board, in one of our math labs, and broke down simple concepts, and showed example problems to enable better understanding. Then I was able to help them individually. Many of them passed their midterms...thanking me for the help.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Advice I would give a student is to check for a teacher (or tutor) that listens carefully. And finally, look for a teacher (or tutor) that can cater to your strengths as a learner.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
This is something that is different with each and every student. There's no specific questions...the questions will naturally come within sessions as students seek understanding of mathematical fundamentals and concepts.
