Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I work in small groups in thirty minute to an hour intervals. I have either a math activity for them to start with that involves the problem or problems that they have to work on. Generally there is a break every half hour because I have discovered that after forty five minutes a student can lose interest.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Two years working in Chicago Public Schools as a tutor.
10 years personal experience working with family members and friends on their homework.
I have also worked with non neurotypical children on social and educational learning.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Can be negotiated.
How did you get started teaching?
First with my younger brother who I have helped with his homework, then through the America Reads program offered by the university that I attended.
What types of students have you worked with?
Neurotypical and non neurotypical. I have worked with the ages of 3 to 15.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I had a student for almost two years and she stopped working with me because she started excelling in Math. Another student who refused to work with me now requests to work with me.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a tutor in your area of expertise?
You have to find someone that makes you feel comfortable and is able to adapt to your learning. It is important to find someone that is going to help you and not make learning stressful, but challenging and fun.
What questions should students think through before talking to tutors about their needs?
I think that the student should make sure that a tutor is not going to make them uncomfortable in anyway.
