Laurel's Tutoring
About
Hello! I'm a freelance tutor residing in the west suburbs of Chicago. I have been tutoring for seven years and have experience with students in Kindergarten through undergraduate school. I have a master's degree in Applied Behavior Analysis with an emphasis in autism and my undergraduate background is in economics and statistics. I'm available to work with students across various subjects, including math, reading, writing, ELA, test prep, chemistry, economics, and statistics. I also work with students on executive functioning skills and career planning.
My tutoring method is based on flexibility and building independence. Together, we'll discuss your student's areas of strength and growth, working together to create a plan that best supports you and your student. My ultimate goal is to equip your student with the skills needed so they don't need our sessions anymore!
Through the dozens of tutoring sessions I've had, I have been motivated most by the connections made with students and families. There are so many times when families find themselves struggling for academic resources and don't know where to start. I aim to be an all-encompassing support who parents can turn to for everything from homework help to rebuilding a healthy relationship with school.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I will meet with the student/parent over the phone and send an additional questionnaire if needed to best support your student. Together, we'll establish 2-4 goals to work on in our sessions. I typcially plan sessions in four week increments, and re-evaluate goals after each increment.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I previously tutored at Kumon centers in the Chicago suburbs and have since worked independently with families in Chicago and online. I hold a master's in applied behavior analysis and a bachelor's degree in economics and statistics. I have also previously worked as a professional writer which allows me to guide students of all ages through the writing process.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Work with someone who makes you feel comfortable asking questions! It's so important to ask for clarification when you are confused so you get the most out of your session.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What are you strengths in the subject and what areas do you need the most support in? What tutoring style makes you feel most supported- do you like to watch the tutor model practice problems or do you like to be guided through the questions yourself?
