About
Get a jump start on the 2024-2025 school year! Yes, I am available for spring final exam preparation, summer courses, summer preparation or remediation for the fall.
I am currently a tenured mathematics professor at a local university, and I have been at this institution since 2001. I have an undergraduate degree in mathematics and a Ph.D. in mathematics. I have been been tutoring mathematics in many situations since I was in high school. I have experience teaching and tutoring mathematics across the curriculum at the college/university, high school, and developmental levels. I also have experience mentoring undergraduate research students in mathematics primarily in mathematical biology and low dimensional topology. I also have several years of experience serving as a reader (grader) for Advanced Placement exams in calculus. You will be able to find reviews from past students at the website listed below in my profile.
I am interested in tutoring in any area of mathematics and will gladly work to help students succeed in their mathematics studies and on their ACT and SAT exams. I am eager to help my students succeed with their course work and develop study habits and strategies that will help them beyond their current course content. Throughout my teaching and tutoring experience, I have worked with high school, college/university, and adult students. For students needing tutoring help with a summer mathematics course, remediation, or just getting ready or ahead for the next school year, I am accepting new students.
I am able to tutor across the high school and college/university curricula, including algebra (all levels), geometry, precalculus, calculus (all parts of calculus), business calculus, calculus for the life sciences, trigonometry, ACT and SAT mathematics, discrete mathematics, linear algebra, abstract algebra, real and complex analysis, modern geometry, differential geometry, topology, probability and statistics, and mathematics content for elementary teachers. I am also able to help students prepare for advanced placement examinations. I am currently writing a calculus for the life sciences textbook. For computational technology, I can help students with graphing calculators, computer algebra systems, and dynamic geometry software.
I have wide range of experience tutoring and teaching students from diverse backgrounds and mathematical preparation. I have tutored high school students, college students, and returning adult students. I look forward to helping you succeed and develop confidence with your mathematical skills and understanding.
I enjoy helping students develop confidence in their mathematical abilities and knowledge, learn mathematics deeply, build connections in their mathematical knowledge, and foster an appreciation of mathematics. I love seeing my students succeed.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When working with new students, I talk with them about their past experience with mathematics and their current issues with which they are struggling. As needed, we can determine if there are particular missing topics or skills for which remediation may be needed. From there, we can get to work with the current material and remediate as needed, providing appropriate explanation at the student's level.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I received my Sc.B. in Mathematics from Brown University in 1991 and my Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Michigan in 1996. I have spent most of my career as a mathematics professor. I am currently a full professor at my current institution and have been there since 2001. I have been tutoring mathematics students in many situations since I was in high school. I tutor and teach calculus (all courses, business calculus, calculus for the life sciences), modern geometry, college algebra, trigonometry, precalculus, mathematics for elementary teachers, differential equations, complex analysis, linear algebra, abstract algebra, topology, differential geometry, mathematical biology, discrete mathematics, graph theory.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
As a trained mathematician with significant teaching experience, I do charge a competitive rate of $75 per hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I have always and a passion for mathematics and teaching mathematics since I was child.
What types of students have you worked with?
Most of my careeer I have worked as a mathematics professor at a university dedicated to teaching. Most of my tutoring students are high school and college students. students. Through my work teaching and tutoring, I have significant experience working with returning adult students, as well.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Students should look for a tutor with deep knowledge of the content area and significant experience teaching and tutoring mathematics and rigorous training in mathematics. A tutor with the passion for mathematics and teaching mathematics is also helpful. For students looking for AP Calculus tutoring, I recommend finding a tutor who has read (graded) AP Calculus exams. I do have this experience.
