Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I love to get to know my students first and build rapport. Without getting to know what the students likes or how they learn it can be difficult to teach. As we continue to build our teacher/student relationship, learning can become much easier.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a 5th grade teacher for CPS. This is my ninth year teaching. I have taught grades 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade Math and Science. I graduated from Indiana University in 2016. In addition to teaching those grades I also have a degree in Technology Integration in Learning, which helps me understand many other tactics and ways to teach using computers and online platforms.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
For my lessons I typically charge $25 for 30 minute sessions and $50 for an hour session.
How did you get started teaching?
In High School we had elective courses to spending time shadowing and helping out in elementary school classrooms, this is where I first came to love working with students. I started teaching as a behavioral aide after graduation. I graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelors in Elementary Education and began teaching for a private school for students that primarily have ADHD, Anxiety and Depression. Since then I have been teaching 5th grade Math and Science on the West Side of Chicago for the remaining five years.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with many students while in private school that had Depression, Anxiety, and ADHD. Students that have had a difficult time learning in a typical school setting. I loved working with students to help them develop their passion for learning and understand they are capable, no matter where they are at in their educational careers
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
If I were a student looking for a tutor, (I was tutored when I was younger) I would want a tutor who is friendly and kind, and that is going to encouraging because having extra learning can feel hard on a student, sometimes making them feel they are not smart enough. I believe it is important to make that student feel empowered and think of learning as a fun tool to help them in the future.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
- What do I enjoy learning about?
- What do I need to practice more?
- How do I work best while learning?
