Alison's Tutoring
About
I have been tutoring students from the ages of 5 to 30 years old since 2012. I learn how best my student learns and use this to my advantage to ensure that they are able to not only understand the material on their homework, but to better understand the concepts as a whole. I strive to ensure that my students will be able to complete problems on their own after working with me.
I love being able to help a student learn and grow their knowledge. One thing that I really enjoy about the work that I do is when I see their face light up with excitment when they finally figure out a problem that they have been struggling with for so long.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to understand what the student is interested and where their main area of struggle comes from. I like to attempt to put the problems into terms that they know or understand such as sports. I take things slow and really ensure that my student knows what to do and is not just going through the motions.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I was a tutor in high school for 3 years for peers my own age. Additionally, I would babysit children 10 years and younger and have to help them with their homework and anytime they had problems. When I went to college, I worked at the Homework Hotline for 4 years assisting students over the phone and over chat.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I typically charge $15-20 per hour depending on the subject at hand. The more difficult the subject the more that I charge due to the complexity.
How did you get started teaching?
I got started tutoring for my National Junior Honors Society. I fell in love with helping students understand the material that I continued doing it from high school on.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students ranging from 5 years old to 30 years old. Most of the time, I work with math and science but can also assist in english tutoring as well.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently got a puppy and have been training him and spending quality time of him. Recently, we moved back to Chicago and he adjusted amazingly. He has helped me adjust to city life and has been just the most amazing dog.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would advice to check the tutors background. Sometimes, tutors like to charge for high level math and science help when they do not have the background knowledge to actually help a student in that area.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
I believe that students should always be able to ask their teachers any questions, however, I think that a student must first attempt the problem on their own using the book or examples. This way they can bring it to their teacher and their teacher can see exactly where the student needs help.
