About

I have a passion for helping students of all ages acheive their highest learning potential. My teaching experience began 13 years ago when I was a reading-recovery teacher for 4 years. I then pursued my graduate degrees (M.A. and Ph.D.) and now enjoy teaching University students each day.

I am here because I want to see all students succeed in their progress toward acheivement. I have taught hundreds of students, from elementary school to University, over the course of my teaching experience and each of them have taught me something about how to be a more effective instructor. I look forward to helping you meet your learning objectives.

While I enjoy watching my students succeed, my favorite part of teaching and tutoring is the process. I thoroughly enjoy watching students grow as learners. Nothing is more gratifying than watching a student's reticence toward a subject turn into pure curiosity. That is where learning truly occurs and where my joy of teaching and tutoring is rooted.

It often takes time and small steps, but I believe all students have it within them to accomplish this growth mindset. I hope to be able to be a part of that journey.

Frequently asked questions

There is no "typical" process. Each student is unique and I aim to meet students where they are. To assess this, I ask about the student's goals and what challenges they may have identified in meeting those goals. I then work with them to overcome those challenges. Often, this means covering a topic/skill that may have been misunderstood or poorly explained from earlier learning that has collateral consequences. It may also mean covering an essential skill that has yet to be identified or developed.

Education: I have 2 Bachelors degrees (English and Criminal Justice) and graduate degrees (Masters and Ph.D.) in Criminal Justice. I have published a number of peer-reviewed articles and recently wrapped up writing my first book.

Experience: I have been teaching for over 13 years. Of these, 4 of these have been with elementary school tutoring and recovery education. I also have 9 years of University educational teaching experience.

By accident! I was fortunate to be given a job opportunity working for an elementary school when I was a "poor college student" and I fell in love with helping people learn. While it is not as lucrative as being the medical doctor I thought I would be, I have the most rewarding career teaching students full time.

Find someone that sees you as a person first and a brain second. Often times progress in learning comes both from clearly explained lessons as well as knowing how you learn best.

1. What are your goals?

2. What barriers (if any) may be in your way to acheiving those goals?

3. How do you learn best?

4. What makes you excited (or not) about learning?
