About

I am a graduate of Drake University with a BA in Mathematics and a BS in 5-12 education with a math endorsement.

I was a Math tutor for Transitions Math - Calc 2 on campus and have also tutoring 6-12th grade students since I graduated in 2015. The past 7 years, I have been a Middle School 6-8th Math Teacher in Mason City Iowa and Sheffield Iowa. I currently only do online tutoring after 5pm. I would be willing to drive up to 20 miles from Madon City, Iowa.

Ellen is fabulous to work with. My son is very comfortable with her and she gives me honest feedback. She is dedicated and wants to prep before the tutor session to make it as effective as possible. She created study guides and my son got 93 % on his algebra final. Thank you Ellen! I would recommend you to anyone!

Frequently asked questions

The majority of my tutor sessions are online sessions scheduled for twice per week at specific times. I ask students to share images of their assignment to me at least 12 hours prior to our session. We go through their answers and I prepare extra interactive slides and problems based on what specifically is causing confusion. I can also help progress learning with extentions.

On new years, I took both my girls (ages 4 and 13) ice skating for the first time in many years. My 13 year old held onto me for dear life as she didn't know how to skate and was slow to catch on. My 4 year old, on the other hand, went into it with no fear! Two very different approaches. Both were able to independently skate by the end of the evening : ) It was nice to be able to spend this quality bonding time together.
Find someone you feel comfortable with. It can feel vulnerable being tutored. You want to look for a tutor who can differentiate between multiple content levels and more importantly, adjust instruction to meet your individual needs. There isn't just one approach to the solution, but multiple solution paths for all different types of learners.
What exactly is causing confusion? What type of learner are you? Hands on? See, then do, understanding the why? Discovery learning?
