Hi!
I'm Lily, a 22 year old student at Iowa State University. I study Materials Science and Engineering with a minor in biomedical sciences, and I'm passionate about math! So far, I've tutored students aged 8 to 14 in algebra 1, algebra 2, geometry, statistics, biology, and more. Tutors contributed greatly to my own academic confidence at these ages, and I'm always excited to watch students grow comfortably the same way.
I love giving students the ability to enjoy school a little more.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When starting with a new student, I like to sit down and get to know them a little. I understand at first tutoring can be intimidating for some. We go through problems in the area we'll be studying so I can figure out strengths and weaknesses to come up with a study plan.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Because I'm a STEM student myself, I am constantly using the math I learned throughout middle and high school. This keeps all that learning pretty fresh. After tutoring several students, I've perfected a routine that's flexible enough to take into account various learning styles. I also have access to many different textbooks and resources as an Iowa State student.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My hourly rate is $20/hr. Most of my students meet up once a week or once every other week, but I am definitley available more often that that. For more than one student my rate is $30 an hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I started tutoring in high school, my high school had a program for honors students to Tutor classes during lunch.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with students aged 8-14. I've worked with students who are fully online, students with learning disabilities, and home schooled students.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I got to watch one of my students go from a D average in algebra 1 to an A average in one semester! It's so exciting to see students start to enjoy math when it becomes more accessible.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure you're comfortable seeing your tutor. Yes, studying is a lot of work and sometimes very difficult, but seeing your tutor should never be a stressful or embarrassing event. Don't commit to a teacher you don't like, but don't commit to a teacher who doesn't challenge you either :)
