"Books are a uniquely portable form of magic."
- Stephen King, "On Writing"
I believe writing is nothing short of astounding. I don't say that as hyperbole; the fact that we're able to make symbols on a piece of paper or a screen and transmit thoughts across time and space into the minds of others absolutely defies explanation. Right now, you're renting out space in your head to my voice, however you imagine it to sound. That would be fantasy if we didn't take it for granted every day.
But it doesn't stop there. Well-crafted turns of phrase have moved mountains in our society. Wars have been fought over chosen words. What's written in our history books defines how we view ourselves and people worry over what they'll print about us after we die. The English language has been an ongoing conversation for millennia and it will carry on long after we're gone.
Above all else, I strive to create in my students a passion for literature and the craft of writing. Every student of English should have a concrete understanding of how language affects our lives and impacts our decisions. My didactic goals don't end at a good grade on a term paper or the perfectly-crafted cover letter. Through critical thinking, line-by-line reviews, and active analysis and discussion of the source material, I want my clients to feel comfortable articulating their ideas fluidly and clearly in English, giving them the confidence to participate in the conversation happening all around them.
