About

I've been hooked on math and science since a child, and always seek the opportunity to spread that interest, as well as technique.

My experience includes over 2 decades of tutoring, as well as teaching at the high school and college level. I was a professor for a number of years at a prominent Miami college. Periodically, I've served as an accuracy checker for a major publisher of textbooks, reviewing study guides and test banks. I've helped students in Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus, Physics and Chemistry, as well as preparation for standardized tests such as SAT, PSAT, and GRE.

My educational background includes a Masters degree from one of the world's top institutions of higher learning, California Institute of Technology (CalTech) in Pasadena, CA. I was a National Merit Scholar and graduated Magna Cum Laude.

I get a special sense of accomplishment when a student who was previously perplexed or lacking in knowledge shows new understanding of concepts and is able to apply them to solve problems. Tutoring allows focusing on working with students who are more motivated than most of those who attend classrooms. It's also much more flexible, allowing the student and me to schedule lessons at mutually acceptable times and durations, which would be impossible to do at fixed class times.

An amazing and responsive tutor who went above and beyond to help me with organic chemistry homework. He made himself available while on a trip with family to help me out. Without his help and explanations, I would not have been able to excel in my organic chemistry class. I received a high A!

My son has really liked Barry Moss as a tutor for 9th grade Honors Geometry. He says Mr. Moss is super nice and explains the math concepts very well (better than his teacher). He has helped him tremendously. As a parent, I have appreciated his attentiveness and patience. He is genuinely interested in how my son is doing. My son started the school year remotely, and his accelerated honors class was first of the day, so he dug himself a deep hole. Mr. Moss helped him recover his grade and his confidence. We highly recommend.

I get a special sense of accomplishment when a student who was previously perplexed or lacking in knowledge shows new understanding of concepts and is able to apply them to solve problems.  Tutoring allows focusing on working with students who are more motivated than most in classroom settings.  It's also much more flexible, allowing the student and me to schedule lessons at mutually acceptable times and durations, which would be impossible to do at fixed class times.
I inquire as to the student's achievements, difficulties, and goals.  Also, I would ask about dates of impending exams, due dates for assignments, and/or the course schedule and syllabus if appropriate.  The student will send me some graded assignments and exams, if available.  Based on analysis of these materials, I would suggest a plan of action.  Hopefully, the student will follow through.

At the present time, my charge is in the $40-50 per hour range. The exact quote can vary depending on the subject, whether travel is involved, etc.
I started by helping fellow students in school. Later on, tutored various STEM subjects. Worked as a graduate teaching assistant at Caltech. I was appointed to professor at a community college.
In terms of academic level, from middle school through college. Some were struggling to pass, and some wanted to improve grade even from B to an A or SAT score from 600s to 700s. Some have had learning disabilities.
I assume this refers to academic successes. When someone who was struggling made a 93, or when a student aced his DAT exam and was accepted to a prestigious Ivy League school, those were nice events to learn about.
