Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I try to assess the student's immediate needs and then work toward improving their skills in academic English.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Ph. D. in English from the University of Delaware, and I have nearly 30 years of experience as a Prof. of English, having retired from teaching at Valdosta SU in 2017. While at VSU, I taught courses in composition, American lit., world lit., critical theory, and literary research and writing, and often worked one-on-one with students to help them improve their skills in the process of critical reading and writing, including research and revision methods.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Usually charge $25/hour for individual tutoring sessions, but am willing to negotiate charges.
How did you get started teaching?
I began teaching in 1986 as a graduate teaching assistant at the U. of Delaware, where I taught courses and small-group sessions in composition, literature, business writing, and American Studies while pursuing my MA (1987) and then Ph.D. (1991) in English.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students ranging from high-school to graduate-level university students, as well as with foreign students studying English as a Second Language.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Decide what you really need help on first, and then direct the tutoring session to address those needs specifically.
