Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
With any student I tutor, I fist like to understand what that student would like to achieve during our time together. It is very important to me to understand the learning objective of my students so that I can know how to best help them get there. After clarifying our direction, I like to briefly review what the student feels comfortable with and what the student feels that they need to work on. I like to understand if they have a solid foundation or if I need to revisit topics from a new angle in order to help the student be able to stand firmly and continue building. Throughout my process I am attune to what teaching style helps the student best, and I adjust my teaching in order to maximize our time together. I also give study advice and test taking advice, so that the benefit of my tutoring will extend far past the hours we spend together.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Depending on the level of the material and the hours requested, I typically charge between $50-80/hour.
How did you get started teaching?
Since childhood, I have always loved helping classmates understand new material. During my free periods, I would hold math study circles, where I would help with the homework and get started learning new material. Going into high school and college, I was involved in mentorship programs and tutoring services where I continued my love for teaching.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students all the way from Kindergarden to College aged. I have also worked with students in Spanish and who have learned English as a Second Language.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would advise a student looking to hire a teacher to not be afraid to try a few out if they feel that they havent found the perfect match. The right person should match your learning style, make learning fun, and never get frustrated or intimidate you.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
In order to maximize the time students have with a teacher, they should ask themselves what they would like to achieve with a tutor and they should ask themselves what they understand and what they don't. I think students should also go through a mental list of the best teachers they have had and understand what about those teachers has been good for their learning style; this will help the student understand if a tutor is a good fit for them.
