Tutoring For Excellence
About
I have a passion to show how fun and how easy math can be. You don't have to be a genius to be good at math. I can show you shortcuts and memory aids to make math processes easier.
I also care deeply about the English language, and strive to teach people how to speak and write it correctly. I help people speak and write with excellence. This will make you much more credible when you begin your search for employment.
I have been teaching since 1980 in a variety of scenarios, from Sunday School to public schools, from Pre-kindergarten through 1st year of college, in every academic subject. I have taught in Montana, California, Florida, Okinawa, Guatemala, and Mexico, in both English and Spanish. Spanish-speaking students are welcome!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I begin by assessing the student´s abilities and weaknesses in the subject matter. I like to work with the student on his/her homework, and we work sample problems to learn new concepts. I will help the student to understand in areas where he/she may be having trouble as demonstrated by homework and quizzes/tests. I do not usually assign work, unless the student requests additional practice.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I studied math in all of high school and college, including Geometry, Algebra, Trigonometry, and Calculus. I am an avid reader, and a skilled proofreader, both in English and Spanish, able to correct grammar, usage and punctuation. I am a skilled teacher of Spanish/English, having been a missionary and teacher in Guatemala and Mexico for a total of over 10 years. I have experience in translating both verbally and textually, informally and technically, between both languages.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$30/hr.
How did you get started teaching?
I began helping fellow students in school from elementary school. Students from upper classes would seek my help with reading and other subjects from the time I was in 1st grade, as I came to school already reading above 4th grade level. I continued to do this through high school, and even in college, I helped friends with difficult subjects. It was only a small jump from there to substitute teaching in Orange County Florida public schools. In recent years several friends have asked me to tutor their children. I have also tutored Nursing Program students with their math.
What types of students have you worked with?
All ages, from elementary school to senior adults.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I made a trip to Montana in the summer of 2017 to visit family, and was able to do some photography as well. It was wonderful to renew relationships with some cousins I had not seen for many years.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would first recommend finding a tutor who really enjoys learning, and who enjoys helping others in any ways he/she can. This type of person makes a great teacher, although he/she might never have been trained to teach.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
"How important is it to me to master this?"
"Am I willing to do what's necessary to learn?"
