Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First I meet with the parent to learn what the student is interesterd in and where his or weaknesses may be. Then we work over a few problems to try to figure out where the student is having problems. We go from there. Ideally, a full non-formal assessment or report card will give me a very good idea of what is lacking. And then putting this all together make tutoring session time pass by very quickly and makes it fun!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have just earned my Master of Science degree in Educational Technology.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My rates are $20-25 per hour. This is VERY competetive as many tutors will charge $50 or more.
How did you get started teaching?
I began teaching in 1993 as soon as I graduated from college. I began as a substitute teacher.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all types of students and I do mean ALL types.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
This past year, one of my algebra students earned her first C. This is the highest grade she has ever received. She barely passed Algebra I.
What questions should students think through before talking to tutors about their needs?
Am I willing to do homework, and lots of it? Grades will not go up magically just because you have hired a tutor. Math, like anything else, takes practice. By not practicing and doing homework, you are throwing good money away after bad.
