Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Typically we set up a khanacademy student account so that I can provide the student with supplemental material. We usually start with whatever the student is struggling the most which on the average turns out to be math. I try to identify the biggest deficiencies in the subject and establish a series of drills or practices. More often than not, I adjust my tutoring style to what fits the student: visual aid, walk-throughs, mental maps, etc.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I worked for 3 years at MVP Kids tutoring center in Arecibo, PR. I worked with up to 10 students at a time ranging grades 3rd-12th grade and occasionally exam prep for college entrance exams.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I typically charge 20/hr.
How did you get started teaching?
A professor at my university commented I had a knack for explaining things and that she had a niece who could use help at a tutoring center. A month later, I was working for her niece at MVP Kids.
What types of students have you worked with?
3rd Grade - 12th Grade.
Occasionally college freshman.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Recently one of my students was able to go from Ds to a class average of B with a lot of hard work.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I think that the main thing is to understand progress takes time and it comes with little victories at a time. As long as you have the enthusiasm and motivation to tackle the issue, you will triumph with hard work and dedication.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
I think they need to consider if they're having trouble focusing on the subject or if they're having trouble understanding the subject. They are both entirely different issues and at times they come hand in hand, but they both need to be treated differently.
