Joscelyn’s Math Tutoring
About
I have taught online both individually as well as through a tutoring company since 2016 and have taught in person since 2011. When I was a student at Rutgers University, I also taught SAT Math classes in a program for local high schoolers. In just over a month of classes, my students had raised their scores on average over 100 points! For classroom-study assistance, I always ask students to send me photos or examples of the material they are studying so that I can best prepare for tutoring sessions ahead of time. For SAT prep, I usually ask my students complete a practice test and/or other diagnostic test so I can identify areas for improvement. Typically we will review those results and any questions that were challenging during the first session (or two if it takes longer). I also take notes for myself to see if there are specific types of problems or topics that could use some practice. From there, I arrange with the student the best structure moving forward, whether they would like specific lesson plans, practice problems, or just general review of practice tests. I always look for ways to connect with my students, as well as find teaching strategies that resonate with them. I tell them that there is almost always more than one way to solve a problem, so if the first method doesn't meet their preferences, then we will try another way. It's my priority to make students feel comfortable to ask questions, keep them engaged, and test their understanding of content and context.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I usually ask new students to send me examples or some notes on the subject in which they are studying. This will help me prepare my own notes and strategies that I can possible share with them. It's important to me to always offer alternative ways of solving problems whenever I can, because many times you can get to the same answer in multiple ways. This helps approach challenges from a new angle, and also promotes the idea of understanding the context of the problem, not just memorizing steps.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
