About this tutor

With 25 years of tutoring and teaching experience, I have helped students ages 3 to adult understand and begin to appreciate mathematics. In order to pay for my Master's Degree in Mathematical Sciences, I worked as an athletic tutor and graduate teaching assistant for the Math Department at Clemson University. Once I received my M.S. in Statistical Analysis, I decided I wanted to teach in a Montessori school so I went for more training and certification. As a Montessori teacher, I focused on individual learners and meeting their needs in order to help them make progress from wherever they were starting. My classroom functioned like tutoring groups, with me providing short demonstrations and giving the students time to try, ask questions, and figure it out. Then I would offer a challenge (aka extension) to help them stretch their thinking and make sure they really were getting it, not simply going through the motions.

My career in Montessori education started with 3-6 year old students, then 6-9, 9-12, middle school, high school and college. In 2007 I also began training Montessori teachers and in 2013 I became an Instructional Specialist for Mathematics in Palm Beach County Schools. I love helping teachers, students and parents wrap their head around the WHY of a mathematical concept so that the HOW becomes easier and makes more sense. I happen to love the Common Core Math Standards (MAFS) and want to help parents see the value these standards add to their child's learning (even if the parents don't get it).

I believe the piece that many students are missing is the ability to notice and recognize patterns and relationships in the numbers. When I help them to see the patterns, I love the "a-ha!" moments, and seeing that "light" come on when something FNALLY makes sense.

Also enjoy providing new strategies and short explanations that help students make sense of the math algorithms or procedures.

Lastly, I like to offer simple structured & patterned strategies that work for simple to complex math, help learners work more efficiently, and allow their brains to focus the energy on the complexity.
