About
For those who do not know me, I absolutely love being a teacher! I am beginning my 5th year as a Math Teacher, and currently hold the Mathematics 6-12 Certification, and have taught the curricuIum for 6th through 9th grades. I enjoy being a private Math Tutor as well, which has enabled me to teach and mentor students beginning in the upper elementary grades through upper classmen in high school. I have also successfully tutored college students enrolled in Algebra and Statistics.
Summer vacation is a time of fun and relaxation for many students. Summer vacation is also a great time for students to invest some time to gain any lost ground from the previous school year. It is also a great time for others to simply work ahead to ease some of the academic pressure of the upcoming school year. High School Junior or Senior in the house and need SAT or ACT Exam Prep? I can help!
Most parents have absolutely no idea whom they should contact to get help. Great news! I am still available this summer and will also have a couple slots available throughout the school year if there is a student who needs a boost.

Perhaps you do not live in my area. Well, that is perfectly fine, because I have tutored students who are long-distance and cannot meet in-person.
The greatest joy as a teacher is accepting the challenge of finding a way to present difficult-to-understand material in such a way that it is easy for students to comprehend. Although I am very traditional in many of my ways, I am very flexible regarding the teaching-learning process. When students burst with great excitement, "Oh, I get it!" or "You were right, Mr. Henry, that was easy!" then you know that your mission has been accomplished!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We always begin with our introductions allowing you to first state your needs and goals of the upcoming tutoring sessions. As you describe your situation to me, I am able to quickly discern the type of help I can provide. My response is that follows is always one that clarifies my experience and level of expertise, specifying how I can help.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelor of Science Degree, mastering the necessary Education courses and hold the Mathematics 6-12 Certification.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My standard rate is $40 per hour, and if we mutually agree that we need to spend additional time to complete our lesson that day, there will be no additional charge. Most students benefit the most from lessons that are no longer than 90 minutes.
How did you get started teaching?
It has been a lifelong passion and dream to be a High School Math Teacher! I have frequently stated that much was given to me as a youth, and I have a huge debt that I will never be able to fully repay. I had excellent teachers in all of my subjects, especially from 6th through 12 grades, and to this day, I often emulate some of teaching stragegies that were used in the classroom many years ago!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have always been assigned students in the classroom who are at or below grade level. I have tutored students who are at that same level in addition to others that have been at the advanced level for their grade. For me, I quickly adapt to the student who needs my skill, and we always find a game plan for success!
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
At the end of each school year, I invite students to get a marker and write a farewell message to me on the large whiteboard in our classroom. Watching students write words of affirmation and gratitude is simply humbling and quite rewarding! I look forward to doing this each year, and always snap a photo for my remembrance. After all, my students are the reason why I do what I do each and every day, and they provide me with the awesome privilege to be their Mr. Henry.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
The best advice I offer every new student is to carefully describe the needs, followed by carefully listening to see if the teacher can provide the help that has been requested. Most of the time, students (and parents) can tell by the tone of voice and the words that are used, whether they will be able to connect with the teacher or not.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
It is always a very good idea to make a checklist of the items that need to be accomplished, coupled with an estimated timeframe that may be necessary to meet the learning needs. I always remind my students that their parents are paying me to help them, and that I want the parents to be satisfied as well. In a friendly, but firm manner, I receive a verbal commitiment from my students that they will apply themselves and will do whatever is necessary to accomplish our goals.
