Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We will begin with an icebreaker to get to know each other. We will then work with a given mathematical topic with many practice examples. Talking about goals and schedules will conclude our first session together.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been a public school teacher in the area of mathematics for over 25 years. I have successfully worked with special education students and typical peers at the middle and high school levels in Connecticut
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Each hour will cost $30. I will supply all the materials, writing utencils and index cards to fulfill the mathematics lessons. I will never be late or absent and I often go just over the time period especially if the student is overwhelmed or needs more clarification.
How did you get started teaching?
It seems that my second language has always been mathematics-related. I began my teaching career as a year-long substitute in many schools within the Hartford, CT area. This gave me a broad view of various types of school systems in my area. I was then offered a teaching contract for the city of Hartford the following year.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have taught a widely diverse group of students including those with and without any designated special education area(s). I have been successful with students who have been diagnosed with ADHD, ADD, autism, learning disabilities and those students who have difficulty with executive functioning and weak overall confidence in mathematics.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I have worked with a particular student for some time and she has actually begun to participate in her mathematics class at her school because she has increased her math fluency and can grab more answers while math class is occuring! How fantastic!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
The match between a tutor and a student in the area of mathematics is essential. The best work will come from two people who are willing to work together with comfort, hard work and even a little bit of fun involved!
