Mathnasium Of New Haven
About
To Parents: We know how to teach your child math.
Our specially trained math instructors will teach your child how to understand math in an individual setting - our unique approach enables us to effectively explain math concepts well and lend a helping hand to every student. Our tutors foster a caring, encouraging environment that helps kids thrive and learn!
We pinpoint your child's learning needs, meet them where they are, and take them where they need to go.
Mathnasium instructors use our unique assessment process to determine (with great accuracy) exactly what each child knows and what they need to learn. Next, we design a customized learning plan for teaching the concepts the student needs to master. It doesn't stop there - our encouraging instructors continually check progress along the way to make sure kids truly understand and retain the concepts we've taught. The results are transformative - kids will see measurable changes in attitude, confidence, and school progress.
We will help your child overcome homework frustration.
Our instructors will also set aside time to provide homework help. We help kids understand the homework assignment so they feel better prepared to complete the work at home - underscoring their understanding of concepts and transforming homework frustration into a welcome challenge.
As the owner and Center Director of the Mathnasium facility in New Haven & Woodbridge and as a life-long teacher\retired faculty member, I utilize my passion for teaching math to help young people. My greatest enjoyment in teaching (math in particular) has come from the realization that showing a student, of any age, that they can succeed in math can change the course of his/her life.

How did you get started teaching?
I was trained as a research scientist. What types of students have you worked with?
In my professional capacity I have worked with a vast number of students ranging from middle school to graduate school in teaching three technical disciplines; Math, Physics, and Computer Science.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a tutor in your area of expertise?
Unlike many other subjects, the core principles of mathematics build on top of one another, so not developing a full understanding of one concept will make it harder to understand the next one. Students lacking the knowledge necessary for success in their particular course and don’t have the time or the interest to acquire the “missing” knowledge, or “gaps,” that are causing their frustration and preventing their success need to work with tutors that can identify their "gaps" and provide help simultaneously to deal with the course material as well as such "gaps".
What questions should students think through before talking to tutors about their needs?
The specific reasons for the students frustration with the material that they are having difficulty with, is it due to the teaching method of their current teacher which is incongruent with their style of learning, or is it due to “missing” knowledge, or “gaps,” in the students own math knowledge background that is causing their difficulty with the math material at hand.
