Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When working with a new student, I start by determining what the students goals are. Are they trying to improve their grade, get ahead for next year, improve their score on the SAT/ACT? I then ask questions about their past math experience. What classes have they taken, what topics were a struggle for them? I may also give the student a quick assignment to assess their prior knowledge.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and a Master's degree in Math Education. I am NYS certified and have over 10 years of classroom experience. In addition to teaching in a public school, I have tutored 1-to-1 students and small groups in Middle School Math, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 and SAT/ACT Prep
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
For elementary and middle grade math my rate is $75 an hour. For high school math and test prep, my rate is $100 an hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I have always loved math and enjoyed working with others. In high school, I decided that I wanted to share my passion for math by teaching. I enrolled in a combined Bachelor's and Master's degree program in college and have been teaching full time since graduating.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all types of learners. I have worked with students who are struggling, including students with IEPs, gifted students looking for enrichment and English Language Learners of various proficiency levels.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
The advise I would give is to make sure the teacher fits your personality. Some teachers look at math as a set of steps to be memorized while others like to explain the background of the process to ensure a more thorough understanding. Make sure their teaching style matches your learning style.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What is your goal? Where are you struggling?
