About
It’s kind of odd to say that one has a sincere passion for tutoring, but that’s the honest truth when it comes to Christine Quigless (Smith College, Class of 2004). At a young age, aged 12, Christine began her lifelong “joy affair” with tutoring because it was her saving grace throughout Middle School, High School, and College; teaching was the most effective way that she learned. What happens when you tutor from age 12? You get really good at tutoring: at figuring out student’s strengths and stretches within minutes of meeting them, at adapting material to a student’s learning style without having to give them an evaluation, and, most importantly, at being willing to make connections for students in exciting/intuitive/creative ways. Teaching Self-Reliance and Accountability are Christine’s most important objectives for any students, and if exciting discoveries for new projects, new topics, and new ways to relate to school work avail themselves, all the better!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to teach via Socratic questioning and to make sure that the student is always asking questions. After years of tutoring, I'm grateful for a developped gift for intuiting into what students need, and from there we focus on using the student's strongest learning modality to connect them to the work. I enjoy creating tools with students that will arm them to do excellent work outside of our sessions. I record our sessions so that students can review our work for feedback and as a result can get a stronger grasp of how they block themselves from connection. The more they see how they get in their way, the more powerfully they will grow in confidence and self-reliance, session by session.

How did you get started teaching?
A very simple story:
I failed sixth grade. I took an IQ test that showed that I had a High IQ and that qualified me for an elite 7th grade program. I, though very terrified, agreed to join the 7th grade program. My mother gave me the most valuable counsel of my life: teach what you don't understand--and I have ever since.
25 years later, I continue to fall in love with tutoring and am grateful to share my gift with students who need my help!
What types of students have you worked with?
I don't think there is a type of student that I haven't worked with. I especially love the "tough cases"!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Connection matters! Every minute you spend with your tutor matters. You should feel that you are making breakthroughs with your subject and should never be afraid to ask questions.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
It's up to the tutor to teach students how to ask the right questions. I encourage all questions, so that I can get as clear an idea as possible of how my student thinks, so that I can taylor my answer and our sessions to their distinct needs.
