About
I am skilled in all learning styles and work hard to teach in a way that feels most comfortable for each student. I adore kids and remember the frustration of not having things explained to you in a way you understood. I can help your child improve their reading and writing skills -- everything from basic ABC's & elementary reading comprehension, through high school and college essay writing.
I also work with adults of all ages, teaching creative writing, personal essays, professional essays (APA, Chicago Style, etc.), SAT prep, and more.
Reading and writing are such joys to me, but intimidating to so many people because they were never taught in a compassionate, fun way. Watching someone learn how to read and write -- and not just comprehend it but enjoy it, is a tremendous feeling.
I also love to help people organize their thoughts. I have worked with brilliant people who just need help translating their intelligence into essay-form. Helping people get their thoughts out is cathartic to me.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Before we get started, I like to understand from the parent's and student's (if possible due to age and ability) perspective on where they need help, where they excel and where they struggle. I like to understand how they like to learn, and if they do not know, we'll try out a few different approaches so the process feels as natural as possible. I want them to feel comfortable with me and will personalize my approach depending on their personality, learning styles and specific challenges.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a B.S. in journalism and English from Syracuse University and have been a professional editor and journalist for 10 years. I was the founding editor in chief of TheMighty.com, a site for people with disabilities and chronic illnesses, and oversaw our editorial content, as well as our internship program, where we gave equal opportunities to applicants with disabilities. I am also a volunteer at local children's hospitals with my dog, Thurman, and former dance instructor for students ages pre-K through college.
