Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Wd first determine what the needs of the student are. We administer a 5-part placement test that gives us an accurate picture of the areas the student needs help with.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
We required of our instructors to have over 5 years of experience in teaching students when they start working for AFI College. Most of our instructors have been teaching over 10 years. Our students have a wide range of skills needs, from fluency in speaking, vocabulary, and accent improvement to writing for business, social, or test purposes, and preparing for professional exams, such as TOEFL, IELTS, or the Cambridge exams.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Yes. For individual instruction, we charge $80 per hour. For small group instruction (between 2 and 4 students), the fee is $120 per hour.
How did you get started teaching?
Most of our teachers gained experience in teaching ESL abroad, to Japan, South America, China, or Europe, to teach English to children, teens, or adults.
What types of students have you worked with?
Every imaginable type: from over 80 nations, all ages, from 6 to 86 years of age, from all backgrounds. Many of our students are professionals preparing for an exam; recent immigrants to this country who need help in speaking; visitors who use their vacation in Southern California to improve their English skills; or high school students preparing for the TEOFL test.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Recently we tutored a pharmacist who was desperately trying to get the score he needed to succeed in his profession. He had tried various services before and always came in short of his goals. We focused on strengthening his weakest skills, and after for two weeks, he passed the exam with four points over the requirement.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a tutor in your area of expertise?
Ensure that the tutor has years of experience, and ask for a syllabus outlining the curriculum.
What questions should students think through before talking to tutors about their needs?
What are my most immediate needs?
How would I prioritize my goals?
What timeline do I have to achieve them?
