About this tutor

As a result of working with me, my students raise their reading levels 1 full year with just 8-12 hours of instruction.  We do this by meeting weekly online through Zoom with a lesson plan created specifically for them.  I've been teaching elementary school for over 25 years and would love to share that experience with my students.  My initial assessment is free so that I can find out your child's strengths and use those to help them to be more confident readers!  You can find out more about me at www.strugglingreaderhelp.com

I love to see that lightbulb light up in a child's eyes when they truly understand something new that I have taught them.  Tutoring is my favorite way to teach because I can really focus on what that child does well and what they need to work on.  We can make progress so quickly!

Sharon is very helpful with her students, and takes time to get to know their strengths and weaknesses in all aspects of reading and other school subjects. She is very patient and kind, and knows of great strategies to implement to help her students succeed.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

I start with a free assessment where I have the student read a bit for me so that I can find out where their strengths and weaknesses lie. Then I write up a full report for the parents with a unique lesson plan created just for them.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have been an elementary school teacher for over 25 years.  I specialize in helping readers boost their reading levels by targeting their specific reading skills where they need the most help.  I have also been extensively trained in strategies for gifted students, and have trained other teachers throughout the country.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

I charge $50 per hour.  For younger students, I find that breaking the sessions up into two 30 minute sessions per week is most beneficial.

How did you get started teaching?

I have wanted to be a teacher ever since I can remember.  My mother taught 3rd grade and high school when I was growing up and I knew I wanted to do what she did.  After college I started training to be a teacher and all through my student teaching, everyone said I was a natrual. I can't believe that I get to do what I love every day.

What types of students have you worked with?

As a public school teacher, I have worked with all kinds of students - those who struggle with the most basic skills, those who are gifted and need an extra challenge, those who long to go to college but need to know the steps to get there, and students who are learning English for the first time.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

I have a student who came to me struggling to stay afloat in the 3rd grade.  The year before, her teachers recommended that she repeat 2nd grade, but her parents were determined to help her succeed.  She was reading at the first grade level.  We worked together all year, I found the books that were just right for her level and we continued to read together while I taught her strategies that would help her to advance.  By the end of the year, she had advanced two grade levels and she was confident, happy, and ready for 4th grade reading with all of her peers!

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Find a teacher who is skilled at figuring out exactly what your needs and strengths are and teaches to those areas.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

Where are you now in your learning?  Where would you like to be?  How do you think I can help you meet your goals?
