Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I start off a lesson by asking my students to tell me what they are struggling with. Once they have identified their weakest areas, I start off with easy problems or questions. I gradually increase the difficulty of questions. Then, after I feel that they have successfully mastered the topic, I ask them to teach it to me. If a student can teach a topic, then they truly have mastered it.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have an undergraduate degree in Liberal Studies from San Diego State University and and a Masters in Arts of Teaching from Brown University.
I have been a 5th grade teacher before and I am currently working as a Home Study teacher at a school in the Inland Empire.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
All of my lessons are a flat fee of $60/hr.
If lessons are online, the fee is $50/hr (these lessons can be conducted through Zoom, FaceTime, or Skype).
How did you get started teaching?
My family is full of teachers! From a young age I knew I wanted to help people learn.
I had my first experience tutoring as a peer tutor at my high school. Through that opportunity, I discovered I loved teaching. I decided to make Education my major in college and I continued on with that as my Masters field of study.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students who have learning and behavioral disabilities, nuerotypical students, above grade-level students. I enjoy working with all students because they each have different perspectives.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
A recent event that I am fond of is Operation Santa from the United States Postal Service. I am happy that the USPS helps families across the US have a wonderful holiday season by providing gifts to children.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would advise students to ask their prospective teacher how they will handle the student's questions. Having a warm and welcoming approach to a student's questions is key to a strong teacher.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Students should consider their learning styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, etc.) and make sure to communicate that to their teachers. With this information, teachers are able to best help their students.
