Monique Abbett, Academic Coach & Educational Consultant
About
Hi there! I provide academic support across the curriculum including essay and research writing support, test prep, organization and planning skills, foreign language support, history and social science course support, and literature analysis. I have worked with students across the curriculum and at nearly every grade from elementary school through university, and have created and directed programs in high schools and universities, but now I have the opportunity to use all the skills I have developed to work one-to-one with my clients to create individualized instructional support for each student's unique academic and personal goals.
The best part of working with clients and students is getting to know them - I really love the privilege of developing a friendship for life with my clients. And ... they teach me so much! I'm very thankful that I get to do this for a living.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We begin with a strategy session to identify strengths, challenges, and specific academic and professional goals. We then create a learning plan that works well for the client, given their current English language level, their availability, and their ultimate goals and objectives. I check in at the end of every session to identify any shifts in future lessons that would better meet my client's needs and goals.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
M.Ed
TESOL Endorsement
Intermediate Spanish & French Language Skills
Certificate: The Art of Inspiring Students to Study Strategically
HR Management Certificate
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I work with each student to create a monthly package price based on their desired number of meetings per week, and length of meetings. Our first strategy session is always free, giving both the client and me an opportunity to make sure we are the right fit for one another!
How did you get started teaching?
I began as an elementary school teacher, and taught grades 2, 5, and 6. I then took a break to raise (and homeschool) my own family, and during this period I was a homeschool curriculum creator and consultant. About 15 years ago, I stepped back into the field of education, and have been both teaching in and directing programs for high school and college students since 2005. I'm now using all my combined experience to work with students one-on-one - and I absolutely love it!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with clients of all levels, from beginning to highly advanced English speakers (graduate university students and executive business professionals). I work with students from middle school on up. Currently, my oldest client is a highly successful and very intelligent business woman who owns her own company and whose English is quite advanced. We are working on accent reduction and the subtleties and nuances of English communication. My youngest client is a high school freshman who just arrived in the US and is a 'true beginner.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I strongly advise anyone looking to hire an academic or professional instructor to ask for a trial (free) lesson. This will give both you and the instructor an opportunity to assess whether or not the instructor is the right match for you! Any good instructor will offer the first lesson free for this reason.
