Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Determine the students needs by discussion with parents and teachers, if needed. Review work completed, if available, to see where problems might be. Listen to the student read and try to get the student to weigh in on where they feel the need is. Writing samples of work is helpful for writing students.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Three years of college and twenty plus years of a successful career. Passion for reading and writing.
Currently on staff at the San Francisco Writer's Conference.
How did you get started teaching?
Everyone has something special about them. I have always enjoyed helping people succeed. I've taught my foster students, large and small groups through church and one on one. I have been blessed with access teachers with their credentials and masters degrees that I can get solid advice and training from.
What types of students have you worked with?
English and ESL, neuraldivergent, medical needs, unengaged students. If I don't believe I can help your student, I will be upfront about it.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
When my foster daughter graduated from college. The first in her family. She worked hard and earned it, but I contributed with all the support I had. It was a truly wonderful day! Second to when my own daughter graduated from CalPoly.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone with not just the skills, but someone you can communicate with. Watch out for red flags and people that seem "off". Be aggressive about your personal success. Go take on the world!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What do you want this time to achieve?
What are your short term, medium and long range goals?
How much effort are you willing to invest?
