About

I have been a college professor for over 20 years, helping students achieve their academic goals of transferring to a university by perfecting their writing and critical thinking skills required in higher academia. Currently I am teaching college-level English composition and literarture at Los Angeles City College. I have a Masters and Bachelors in Comparative Literature at the Uiversity of California Santa Barbara and have been on campus-wide committees focusing on student success.

I have many of my students go on to get their university degrees at very prestigious institutions. They often contact me to tell me of their achievements, and I am always amazed how far they have gotten in their careers and in their lives. Each one of them didn’t know where to start at first, but in the end they all managed to find their paths to success.

    Frequently asked questions

When I first meet with a new student, I see where they are at, in terms of skills and challenges. Then I adjust my lessons based on their needs. I assesss their abilities to see how much progress they have made and I give them sound advice to reach their desired goals. If a student simply have an essay or a reading to do, I review their reading or assignments to guide them on the right track.

I have been teaching English composition and literature for the last 20 years. I have taught at Santa Monica College, Dominican University of California, and Orange Coast College, before being hired at Los Angeles City College. Currently I run the Student Success Committee and manage the Student Equity Plan for the college.

Since my main focus is on college prep, I usually charge $25 per hour or session.

I have always wanted to teach college courses that focus on critical thinking and writing. I believe that writing well and thinking critically are the foundations for success in any field of study.

At my college I have a diverse body of students from many ethnic backgrounds and abilities. Since I have been involved with equity issues, I believe that every student deserves an opportunity to succeed and can achieve success as long as accommodations are there. I have worked with foster youth and students with disabilities. I have taught students in junior high and high school, as well as college-bound students. There has never been a student whom I didn’t see a potential to achieve their academic goals.

Right now I am working with high schools to align their curriculum with college expectations, building pathways that will seemlesssly guide students toward a college degree and a career. It is a steady process that ultimately will get more students into college.

Students should be clear on their long-term goals. It is not about finishing an essay or homework assignment or passing a test. Everything they do is to promote a skill needed to be successful, regardless of their major or area of interest. Take everything you learn as a step toward your future selves.

What are my long-term goals, and how do this skills correspond to these goals? Everything taught in school has a connection to my expected career. How do I get there from here?
