Hello, my name is Otis Jones. I recently graduated from UCSB with a B.S. in Mathematical Science and a minor in Statistics. I am looking to tutor SAT math, ACT math, and high school math.

I am available to tutor online through Zoom/Skype/Facetime or in person in the greater Santa Barbara area.

I enjoy taking complex mathematical ideas and making them easier to understand.

I earned an 800 on the Math portion of the SAT and held several leadership positions including a team leader with the UCSB Data Science Club and a crew leader on my way to earning my Eagle Scout.

I charge 40 dollars an hour for tutoring.

Otis is great! He has been tutoring me for a few weeks now, and it has made all the difference. After not having been in school for over 10 years, getting back into math was very difficult on my own. Otis made the transition so smooth. He is great at explaining the concepts and principles. He not only teaches you how to do the problems, but the reasoning behind it, which was very important in my statistics class. He is incredibly patient and helpful when I don’t understand something, and can always find another way to approach it so that I do. I currently have an A in my stats class, thanks to the help of Otis!

Otis is very easy to talk to and makes things easy to understand. Hes helped me in various math classes and recently helped me go from a D to an A in Statistics. I was struggling with really understanding the concepts, I tend to rush through things and make tiny errors. I found that my professors and other tutors I worked with were not helpful and didnt slow things down for me to understand.

Otis seemed to really care about my success in the class and analyzed my personality quickly to figure out my learning style. He adapted his tutoring style to fit with me and taught me in a way that made sense (I am not math minded at all).

The areas in Statistics where I was really struggling became clear through Otis. He is a great tutor and I would highly recommend!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

In general I believe in asking the student questions and giving hints to help the student come to understand a practice problem on their own, not simply telling the student the solution and moving on. I also place importance on making sure the student has good algebriac fundamentals. Being fluent in algebra is the building block of being able to score high on the SAT/ACT and to master calculus and beyond.

Every indivdual student is different so the first thing I would do is talk with the student over email or a quick phone call and establish the student's goals, struggles and what the material is. Once I have this information I will review the material and make a plan for that student's goals.
