About
Hi. I am Yuanmin. I graduated from UC Berkeley with a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science. After that, I went to graduate school at UC Davis and graduated with a Masters in Structural Engineering.
Math was always my favorite subject in college. During my time as an undergraduate, I was a math tutor at Berkeley City College Learning Center. There, I tutored precalculus, calculus and elementary statistics weekly for one academic year. I also often tutored my younger cousins on their math homework during summer breaks.
In Graduate school, I studied structural Engineering. For one semester, I was a grader and assistant for my professor on students homework. So I was able to have some experience tutoring.
Math is an interesting subject because it requires one to really think and understand. Thus, I believe that if my students want to be able to solve math problems independently after tutoring session, they will need to think and prepare to ask a lot of questions before and during the tutoring session.
During the tutoring session, I would encourage my students to try to understand and I would guide them through understanding the specific problems they have difficulty with. When they see similar problems again, they will be able to solve them.
Here is a fun quote of the day.
Mathematician, William Thurston once said, "Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms: it is about understanding."

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I would like to assess their current leve or undertstanding or difficulty the have. Then I will more forward from there. I think practice is important part of understanding. Thus, I will try to get my students to practice in the areas they have difficulty with.
