Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I start off with getting to know the student's needs for learning (e.g. pass a course, ace a course, or other) and then work out the study plan accordingly. I encourage students to try to do some homework (that I can assign) on their own time, and then work thorugh it with them and assess their progress.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Masters degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from University of California Irvine.
I got a bachelors degree in Civil Engineering from IIT Bombay, India.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Standard rates are around 60-75$/session, for a standard session length of 1-1.5hr . Rate and duration depends on topic and student needs.
Longer sessions costs may vary.
How did you get started teaching?
Working with and helping my peers in undergraduate college.
What types of students have you worked with?
My peers, and my juniors (late teens and early twenties). My last student was in her 40's. So a wide variety of students. I do not have experience with special needs students or very young students.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
The Indian festival of Diwali. It is an event that has people gathering to celebrate a historic event (which many many centuries ago, dates not confirmable) of return of an Indian king Ram after victory in battle over a corrupt king Ravan.
On this occasion, every year since then, people in India light up their homes with candles/lamps/lights and prepare sweets and also hold prayers for continued emergence of good over evil.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I think it is really nice to have a set goal while starting tutoring , that really helps to keep both the student and teacher on track. Goals may change over time, but at each point the target should be known. Then discuss with the teacher what her/his plan is for achieving the goal.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
1. Is there any way I could have tried it differently ?
2. Am I being honest and clear with myself about my needs ?
3. What did my peers or seniors do in similar situations ?
