Ms. Coffin (using Making Math Real)
About
Although I am a classroom math teacher, I love working one-on-one with students, especially on the heels of a year of remote learning. In the district where I taught, we only moved to in-person for the last two months of the school year & too many of my students only became engaged once they were back to in-person.
As we start this new school year, I look forward to helping a few students individually, just as I have also helped my whole math classes in middle & high school.
I most enjoy helping students "fill in the missing links" in the chain of knowledge in Algebra. I enjoy how easily my students become able to do their current Algebra once their foundation has become sturdy & solid. Geometry presents other challenges which sketching & working with color usually meets. I implement a structured, incremental program which will systematically accomplish these goals & make math clear & real for my students.
I wish all students seeking extra help in math the best of luck on your math journey - it can be so frustrating at first, but with help & reliable support, you will grow & improve - I promise.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
While I'd normally meet in-person, in order to minimize health risks where possible, I like to start with a fact-time/ zoom call where students & I, along with parents when applicable, have a brief chat to discuss needs in terms of math help, frequency of tutoring, etc. Once we have met, we set up a face-to-face meeting (masks on are a must) to start working together.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
A credentialed math teacher, I have tutored in many arenas, whether in the math lab at junior colleges, in after school programs in small groups & privately with both high school & college age students, in elementary math through Calculus. I also worked at Huntington Learning center for a year, which focuses on specific math skills. However, my most effective tool is the Making Math Real program I have trained in for over 270 hours. I am most excited about this efficient approach to teaching math concepts in the most effective way I have ever come upon. My students love it & really understand the math after learning this way.
