Students First Tutoring
About
I began tutoring during my second year of college. I began with tutoring fellow students in Music and Spanish. From there I have branched off to tutoring in ESL, Basic Math, Basic English, Basic Writing, and Reading.
My main goal in tutoring is for the student to walk away with a sense of accomplishment. In order to move forward in subjects, students must feel comfortable in the foundations of a subject before trying to comprehend details.
I have been tutoring and teaching for the past 8 years; both adults and children. I have taught ESL in Japan, China, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
1. Ask the students what their goals are.
2. Ask some basic questions to determine if there are any foundational pieces in the subject that we have to learn/improve on.
3. Ask them if they know their preferred learning style.
4. Go over some current work to determine where their struggles lie and backtrack to create understanding from the beginning of the process.
How did you get started teaching?
In college, a professor saw potential in me and asked me to become the departments' tutor. As I began that path, I found so much joy in seeing students understand something that had been difficult a half-hour before. I started to assist teaching in the lower classes and moved on to tutoring outside of the college in a few years.
What types of students have you worked with?
Adults and Children.
Adults and Children with learning disabilities.
Students with ADHD and ADD.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone you are comfortable with and who listens to you! You can find the tutor with the highest degree and experience but if you don't connect with them you will be placing yourself at a disadvantage. A connection is one of the most important aspects of a tutor-tutee relationship.
