About

The biggest feature of Singular Mathematics Tutoring is that you will be working with a mathematics professor with over a decade of teaching experience, Dr. Wyatt Howard. You will be receiving the highest quality instruction possible, working with a patient teacher who truly enjoys the craft of teaching, and has a deep understanding of a wide range of both applied and theoretical mathematics.

I received my Ph.D. in pure mathematics from UC Santa Cruz in 2013 and B.A. in pure mathematics from UC Berkeley. I am currently a lecturer of mathematics at Cosumnes River College, a community college in the Sacramento area. I offer tutoring in everything from arithmetic and pre-algebra to calculus, mathematical proofs, and upper-division courses.

I have taught at a variety of different types of institutions that have allowed me to interact with a wide variety of students. I have taught in the heart of Silicon Valley at De Anza College, Santa Clara University, and at nearby UC Santa Cruz.

Whatever goals you are trying to achieve in mathematics, I am confident that I can give you the support and guidance that you need.

I enjoy the challenge of helping students overcome hurdles in their understanding of mathematical concepts. Coming up with creative approaches to help students grasp topics that have been eluding them is extremely rewarding to me because I strongly relate to the experience of struggling with mathematics.

Mathematics did not come easy to me. For much of my childhood, I struggled with how I could learn and retain complex ideas and techniques from my mathematics classes. I later realized that understanding mathematics is much like strengthing a muscle in the body. One needs to think carefully about how they approach the study of mathematics to optimize their time and energy to acheive their desired results within mathematics. Because of this, I take a hollistic approach with each of my students and build study strategies that best fit the way they learn and time that they can devote to their studies.

    Frequently asked questions

Before working with any student, I spend time listening to and assessing them to ensure that I am aware of their specific needs and gaps in understanding.  I always start by asking what their goals are and how they study. I also ask whether they have any anxieties about the subject matter.

Then, together we will develop a holistic plan that addresses the students' needs and creates a reasonable timeline for achievement.

My goal with every student is to create a non-intimidating environment where students can feel comfortable giving and receiving honest critical feedback.

I have over ten year of teaching experience at Universities and Colleges in California.

I received my Ph.D. in pure mathematics from UC Santa Cruz in 2013 and B.A. in pure mathematics from UC Berkeley. I am currently a lecturer of mathematics at Cosumnes River College, a community college in the Sacramento area.

The initial one-hour tutoring consultation is $25. All subsequent tutoring is $40 per hour.

My first experience teaching was as a graduate student instructor at UC Santa Cruz during the 2007 fall quarter.  I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of working through homework problems and reviewing concepts the students learned in lecture.  After this experience, I knew that I wanted to be a lecturer of mathematics when I finished with graduate school. I sought out every opportunity to teach summer sessions whenever possible and transitioned to teaching at the community college and Santa Clara University shortly after graduate school.

I have worked with a variety of students.  Some have been students who struggled with mathematics and math anxiety to working with students who were mathematics majors that embraced complex mathematical challenges, and I have worked with numerous students who are in between these two extremes.

One thing to consider is that I can provide students with study strategies and identify solutions for how you can approach studying mathematics, as well as other STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) related courses.  This is an huge added advantage for anyone who has struggled with

Another aspect to consider is that you will be working with a patient instructor who has worked with a large number of students that vary in their understanding of mathematics.

Lastly, for students who are interested in majoring in STEM fields in college, I have a great deal of insight into the challenges and how to overcome the learning curve that is required to be successful at the community college and at four-year institutions.  I can tailor additional or enhanced curriculum to the student's needs that will prepare them for college level work.
