What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Establish the goals for the session(s). Demonstrate approaches to doing the problems and learning the concepts. Allow student to feel comfortable in expressing their understanding and in doing the tasks. Check for understanding via asking the student questions.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Master’s degree in Geophysics from Caltech. 14 years of teaching high school science and math and tutoring privately. 22 years of teaching college math and science at the University of La Verne, Mt. SAC, Chaffey College, Cal Poly Pomona, Citrus College, Cal State LA. UCLA teaching assistant in statistics. Volunteer tutor for returning veterans at PCC.
How did you get started teaching?
I was in grad school at Caltech when I started tutoring in an after-school program. Upon leaving grad school I began teaching high school math and science.
What types of students have you worked with?
Grade 5 to college. Children to adults. Basic math to Advanced calculus, statistics. Also physics, chemistry, biology, geology.
