As a tutor, my aim is to do everything I can to help my students achieve their goals, and I take a personal interest in each of my students. I find out your interests and goals and personalize each lesson to match your learning style and needs. My past students have said that I am patient, enthusiastic, skilled, dedicated, “a great teacher” and “a gifted educator.”
I am trained and experienced in tutoring and teaching English, ESL, Language Arts, Spanish and test preparation. I have been an educator for the past twelve years. Please read below under My Skills, Experience and Educational Background for more information.
The most satisfying aspect of my work is helping my students overcome their challenges and go on to achieve mastery of their subject. I enjoy helping students learn to express themselves more clearly and compellingly in writing and speaking. I also love helping students to gain full understanding of what they read, whether it be fiction, plays, poetry or nonfiction. Finally, as a tutor, I am excited to lead students toward a love of the English and Spanish languages, two of the most beautiful languages on earth.
My Skills, Experience and Educational Background:
I graduated magna cum laude from Tufts University in 1991.
I am a certified English as a Second Language teacher and can help English learners with speaking and conversation, reading, listening and writing, including professional and academic writing. I received my Cambridge University CELTA ESL teaching certificate in 2011 and have been an ESL educator since then.
I am also an English/Language Arts specialist and have worked in that capacity for the past twelve years as a private tutor, in the public schools and with community organizations. I have worked successfully with elementary through college students on all aspects of English including reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and academic papers. Several of my students have received awards for academic progess and a number have been admitted to colleges of their choice. I provide mentoring and college essay guidance throughout the application process.
I also provide test preparation services for the English and writing sections of the SAT, ACT and CBEST. I provide test preparation for the TOEFL.
I tutor beginning and intermediate Spanish. I lived and studied advanced Spanish for a year in Ecuador at Academia LatinoAmericana and I edited a Spanish textbook for English speakers while there.
My students and their parents have said that I am a patient, encouraging, enthusiastic and skillful tutor.
Marie was a very thoughtful teacher. Based on my experience, I would say she is using traditional methods of teaching English. I will definitely recommend her for kids, students and beginners.
Thank you so much for all your prep for our lessons! And for planning the lessons around my needs. I enjoyed every session while making good progress with my Spanish!
Exceptional teaching quality and a delight to work with!
Marie Favorini is a very thoughtful and engaged tutor. She listened to what I needed and really went above and beyond to address my specific needs. I highly recommend her!!
I offer a free in-person consultation so that the student (and parents) and I can meet. This gives everyone a chance to ask questions before starting lessons. During this session, I informally evaluate the student’s needs and we set preliminary goals. If applicable, I also review the student’s academic work. Some of this process can also be done over the phone or by email if preferred.
