Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
It's important to discuss with the student and parent the areas of difficulty. This gives us a clear picture that guides the necessary steps taken to remedy the problem. Detailed goals are outlined to measure success.
Creating a comfortable rapport built on trust, respect, patience, and encouragement is vital for growth to take place. I do not shy away from challenges and believe in the capability of every student when given the chance to learn and succeed.
I tailor my tutoring to the uniqueness of each student and draw upon different learning styles that best suit them.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have earned a California Teaching Credential for grades K-8, taught in public school, and mostly instructed students privately through the years. I've gained valuable insight and skills by directly working with students in the classroom, small groups, and individually. My degree in Social Ecology with an emphasis in Human Development from UCI, as well as my studies in teaching methods, and various learning strategies provide a strong knowledge base.
I've always loved writing, and English is a subject I'm passionate about and excelled in as a student. I've been freelance writing for businesses and have completed novels in the process of obtaining representation. This has given me a further and continually growing understanding of effective writing.
My teaching has given me the most experience and training. Connecting with students, making the material meaningful and relevant for them, and inspiring them to do their best is my forte.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My tutoring sessions usually run one hour, but can be half an hour for younger children. The half-hour sessions are best scheduled twice a week for optimum success.
I charge $36 an hour and $18 for half an hour
I'm flexible in creating a plan that works best for each client.
How did you get started teaching?
I've been teaching since I can remember. It has always been a natural part of my personality, starting with my younger brother, neighbors, and friends. I loved proving that they could understand a concept, learn a new skill, master what they and others thought they couldn't. Even before I earned my credential, I worked in classrooms and helped students who were falling behind catch up with their classmates.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with students of all ages, special-needs students, grade-school students, and also adults.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
A teacher that has experience in the subject you need assistance with is very important. Just as crucial is a teacher's passion to help you understand, to convey the information in ways that make sense to you.
Knowledge in the topic is essential, but the ability to teach, which requires listening attentively, communicating the subject matter in a clear way while providing patience and encouragement is equally important for success.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Which aspects of the subject are giving you trouble?
What do you hope to accomplish from tutoring?
How do you feel about the subject?
It's normal to have doubts about your ability to understand the work. That is where a tutor can truly help.
I look forward to helping you reach your goals and experience confidence and success.
