By The Numbers Math Tutoring
I work with students one to one. I tailor my sessions to what the student needs. I write everything down for the student in easy to understand English. I have been doing what I do for 25 plus years with most of this time spent in the Modesto area. I am available weekends if needed. I will e-mail students with extended help if they need it. I will suggest ways the students can improve study skills.
The best part of my job is seeing a smile on my students face when they finally understand their subject. My goal is to get a student where they do not need me anymore. It is the best feeling I have ever had.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My process is to work with the student for about an hour. After the end of the hour I can reasonably evaluate what a student is lacking or excelling at. I speak with the students, not at them. I do not talk down to them but rather with them. Most people when they first come to tutroing are nervous. I want the students I work with, either young or not so young, to feel comfortable around me. I want my students to feel they can ask me anything with confidence. I will not lie to my students, and I will not lead them on faking knowing an answer. If I do not know it I will let them know. After the session I will find out how to answer the question or questions askied.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been a private tutor for over 25 years. I was taught the ins and outs of tutoring at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton California. I have learned how to work with those who have ADD and ADHD. I hold two Masters Degrees, one in Leadership and one in Education. My Bachelors Degree is in Communications.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My standard price is $30 an hour with a one hour minimum.
How did you get started teaching?
It started at Delta College. I was hired in the tutoring center there. Due to budget cuts all of the tutors were let go except 2, myself and another person named Alicia. I asked why me and was told by the director at the time I was easy to understand and get along with. I knew my subjct well and could teach it back to others. People from the general public started to call the tutoring center asking for a tutor. Alicia was legally blind and could not drive. I volunteered to go and meet with people. That was in 1989. From there I have taught in a private high school here in Modesto.
What types of students have you worked with?
The youngest age of a student has been 3, and the oldest has been in her early 70's. I have tutored and am tutoring those who need help in the basics through Calculus One. I do not tutor Statistics or Chemistry.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Every person I have worked with has brought as much to me as I have brought to them. I have learned so much from those I was supposed to be tutoring.
I think the best was was working with two women who were heading into the nursing program. One was tying to pass a placement test to get into a math program at MJC. She wound up in Math 101 which is a transferable class to any UC or CSU. The other was in a basic algebra class also at MJC. When she came to me she was really struggling. By the time the semester ended she had an A. Both of those examples tell me I am on the right track and have the right career.
