The Math Doctor
About
The Math Doctor is a one-on-one tutoring service that specializes in one-on-one tutoring for all levels and all types of math (algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, calculus, statistics, and more), including online courses. In addition to math, expert tutoring in physics as well as tests such as the PSAT, SAT, SAT II, ACT, ELM, CBEST, GRE, etc., is also available.
Tutoring is available both in person at the office (located in the La Mesa Brigantine Restaurant Complex) or online. The online tutoring is extremely interactive, as opposed to simply watching/listening to a lecture -- I highly recommend trying it out, as the vast majority of my students really love it!
The office is located in the lower level of the La Mesa Brigantine Restaurant Complex, and has a lobby (with wifi) so parents are free to hang out during the session (parents are free to sit with their student, but the students generally prefer mom or dad to be somewhere else). Sometimes, students prefer to come with a friend or classmate, and, on those occasions, two or more students may share the appointment with a single tutor.
Typically, students use our services to get through their homework and prepare for quizzes and exams. Mostly, students will come in for one or two appointments per week, with appointments usually lasting from half and hour to an hour (although, on occasion, longer appointments are booked).
The Math Doctor is a "pay-as-you-come" service. That is, there are no contracts and no signup fee. Payment can be made each time (check or cash -- no credit or debit), and the fee is $50 per hour for one or more hours, $40 per 45 minutes, and $30 per half hour.
Perhaps the most important point to note is that after a session, all questions answered. There will be no doubt how to work the problems, or what has to be done to get the grade on the test. Any question a student has will be answered, and they will understand the answer -- I guarantee it. How does this guarantee work? If you are not 100% satisfied, there is no charge.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Typically, students come in for help with their homeword and/or preparation for a test. The usual process is to first ask if the student has work that is due soon and/or a test or quiz coming up, since getting the grade is the priority.
After determining what needs to be done, the student is given a quick assessment as to whether all that needs to be done can be accomplished within the time frame, and, if so, we get right to work! If it will take longer, then we prioritize the tasks and decide after the session if more time is needed.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been a professional tutor for 20 years and in the same location for the past 15 years. My background is in applied mathematics (math and physics).
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
The rates are fixed at $50 for an hour, $40 for 45 minutes, or $30 for half an hour. There is no sign up fee or obligation -- it is simply pay as you go.
What types of students have you worked with?
I work with studends of all ages and levels, from elementary school through college and adults. I have also worked with special needs students, to include ADHD and Aperger's.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a tutor in your area of expertise?
The number one quality to look in for a tutor is the ability to communicate the subject matter. It doesn't matter how good the tutor is at math if they cannot get you to understand that. To this end, the most important qualities are patience and competence.
